This was because the ampoules gave the possibility to see and to predetermine the time elapsed and the time still to flow; moreover, they were not threatened by the atmospheric agents as instead were the mechanical clocks, for whose materials rust and saltiness constituted a decidedly serious threat; and moreover the rolling and pitching of the hull were very harmful for their mechanisms, not to mention the storms or the border crossings.
