Powder hourglasses (or sand clocks), also known as "ampoules", were used in the Middle Ages. They were special instruments that exploited the fall of very fine dust or crushed and sieved egg shells, and for many centuries they were used mainly to mark a limited portion of time. Above all they marked the time of study and teaching, they were used in the convents to mark the times of prayer and in the churches to control the duration of the sermons.
